Commercial Union was formed in 1861 in London as a result of the Great Fire of Tooley Street. The fire resulted in more than £2 million worth of damage, which caused the fire insurance companies to massively hike their premiums. So much so that local merchants decided to form their own insurance company and called it the Commercial Union Assurance Company.
