Cyrus Clark (1801-1866) started a business in Street, Somerset, in 1825 making sheepskin rugs. A few years later he employed his younger brother James Clark as an apprentice. James had the idea to use the scrap offcuts from the rugs to make slippers (known as Brown Petersburgs). They went on to become one of the UK’s leading shoe manufacturers.
